Extended Plays

All of the Extended Plays were released before the band's self-titled debut with The 1975 and they were released in two formats - DL and 12" vinyl.

Their first EP's, Facedown, lyrics were written by Matty Healy himself and the sound was noted as "reverb-soaked guitars and emotive vocals with a distinct twang."

The second EP, Sex, received positive reviews. Paste Magazine praised The 1975's "haunting vocals" and described the eponymous single as "full of catchy hooks". Nylon Magazine lauded their "accent-inflected truisms" and the use of guitars in their music. All the lyrics were written by Matthew Healy, George Daniel, Nisha Sangar and all music was composed by The 1975, Coles and Coles.

The third EP, Music For Cars, shares its name with the band's third studio album, scheduled for release in 2018. According to Rolling Stone, "The 1975 wrap two pop anthems inside a trio of hazy, atmospheric journeys". Venture Mag gave it a 7/10, describing it as "sonically diverse", bringing "an honest, fresh sound to alternative pop" and "genuinely exciting" to listen, but also "possibly too experimental for a long-lasting affect".

Their fourth EP, IV, received near-positive reception. Sam Lawrie from Motion and Sound Magazine wrote: "The other-worldly sound is fascinating, and the appeal of The 1975 is obvious when they stand out so much in the alt-rock genre. On the other hand, it can also fail to make an impact, and that is a risk The 1975 have decided to take. Basically, you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it, but no doubt it’ll be another success in the fans’ eyes."

Musical Ramble rated the record 3.5/5, saying "I came into IV feeling skeptical that the seemingly schizophrenic personality of the band would eventually be their downfall, but came out pleasantly optimistic about what the album might be like. The EP isn’t without its flaws and I still think the inclusion of 'The City' was a bad call considering it will be the last release before the album."

The song was written and produced by Matt Healy and George Daniel, and it was only performed by them as well. Healy stated: "We wrote Medicine for our chosen scenes. Medicine, its title and sentiment, goes all the way back to the original The 1975 project that was based in my bedroom. It's a new piece of music informed by the genesis of our band and our love for 'Drive' as a film. ... The movie itself plays with the duality of resignment and hope - and this is most obvious and stirring in the scenes we chose to score. The song is a testament to that same idea and has in turn become one of our most personal and best loved pieces of music to date."

"Love Me" is the 9th single released by The 1975. It charted in UK (#20), Australia (#35), Ireland (#40), Scotland (#10), US (#100) and was certified Silver by BPI. It's also the first song of their new and more colorful era.

According to Matthew Healy, the band's vocalist, the song was born out of confusion in response to the band's success. He spoke on the song's genesis to Billboard: "It came from jamming. We're big Talking Heads fans, big Scritti Politti fans, and Japan as well. "Love Me" was just three years of being on the road and not wanting to soundcheck the same song every night. That riff just happened. "Love Me" sounded bombastic and ridiculous and a bit arrogant and I was like, "That's what it needs to be about. The rock star buying into his own self-constructed mythology." We found ourselves, as a band, being immersed in a world we didn't feel part of. So it's just… love me, if that's what you want to do."

Matthew Horton of NME wrote that the song "fizzes with overweening confidence, fitting for a song Healy says is about narcissism." Nick Williams at Billboard dubbed it "an impressive coming-of-age shift" and a "spirited step away from the radio-friendly teen rock of its debut." Brennan Carley of Spin's response was favorable: "A track that wouldn’t be out of place on any Neon Indian record, albeit with more heavily U.K.-accented vocals, "Love Me" shows the band loosening their grip on accomplishing much of anything beyond the sprawling, joyous fun of making good tunes."

"UGH!" is their 10th single that charted in UK (#42), Australia (#113), Ireland (#80) and Scotland (#26).

Rhian Daly, writing for NME, praised the song as being "bold, brilliant and thought-provoking." The song was also praised for its instrumentation, with "uplifting synth melodies" and "a foot-tapping beat you'll be dancing along to in no time," and described as "sounding practically joyous, bright, supple guitar lines rippling like they’re being played on a wobbleboard and a loose rhythm section virtually encouraging finger-clicking, hip-dipping dad-dancing." Carolyn Menyes wrote that "UGH!" also excelled lyrically, "infusing together tight hooks with a lyrical bite."

The 11th single called "Somebody Else" charted in UK (#55), Australia (#34), Ireland (#70) and Scotland (#29). Reaching a peak of number five in the US on the Alternative Songs chart, it is the band's highest-peaking single on that chart to date. NME named it the second best song of 2016. Pitchfork listed the song on their ranking of the 100 best songs of 2016 at number 74. It was also certified Silver by BPI.

The music video has gained over 35M views and 449k likes as of 27 May 2018.

"The Sound" is the band's 12th single. It is currently the band's highest charting single in the UK, peaking at number 15. Rolling Stone named "The Sound" one of the 30 best songs of the first half of 2016. It has also featured on the YouTube channel 'Jess and Gab.'

The music video for the single has gained over 38M views and 362k likes as of 27 May 2018. In the video, the group are shown dressed in black and playing in a large glass cube in a dark room throughout. The cube's lighting intersects between black and white to pink as they play, and at one point fills with smoke. They are observed from outside and spoken about by well-groomed strangers all dressed in white, with pink cards showing negative comments from real-life critics about the band as they play (such as Terrible high-pitched vocals over soulless robo beats, Totally lacking the wow factor, and Pompous arena synth-pop) Lead singer Matty Healy writes 'HELP ME' on the glass, and the video ends with the band sitting and observing the critical audience inside the box.
